Feral philodendrons in AwGhost
Piers Anthony writes about feral philodendrons, which conjured up images of roaring flora, saliva dripping from bepetalled jaws. Not at all what he meant, as the rest of that paragraph in his latest newsletter proves, but still a highly evocative phrase.
I first stumbled onto HiPiers.com back in 2001. I’ve been back several times to read his bi-monthly essays, in which he discusses his home life, his writing, politics, publishing, strange things he finds on the Web (or off of it), the vagaries of medical services and telecommunications companies, and everything else that comes to mind. His online voice sounds very like Smash Ogre under the influence of the Eye-Q vine.
The August newsletter is no different (except that he spelled the month in the conventional way, instead of using “AwGhost”). The philodendron he transplanted turned out to be a Xanthosoma lindii, about which Google can tell me nothing except that Piers mentioned it on his site — veritable proof that it is indeed a Xanth refugee. His wife had a successful operation and is up and about, which is very good news indeed; his previous post (in JeJune) expressed some anxiety on that score. His eighth Incarnations of Immortality novel is now with Mundania Press, since traditional publishers hadn’t acted on it. Woe is me — will it ever reach these shores? I’ve a long way to go in collecting Incarnations, since I only have On a Pale Horse, which I found at Booksale a couple of months ago.
It’s extremely difficult to find Piers Anthony’s books in the Philippines, unless you look really hard in Booksale and similar places. A pity, as reading his posts makes me want to read his other works, like Bio of a Space Tyrant and the rest of Incarnations. Some of these are offered on various sites (linked from his own) as e-books, but I am leery of e-books as yet; for me an actual book will always be best.
So, off to the bookstores again soon, just in case I get lucky. And back to the newsletters, as well. But I still like the bit about the feral philodendrons best. Maybe I’ll write and tell him so.
Or not. Ogres can be much more intimidating than Dream Kings.
