Looking for me?

Mayor Diana

When I was in grade school, we had class presidents and vice-presidents. It was only when Daren first transferred to Stella Maris that I encountered the term “Mayor”. Seems the SMC authorities aren’t too fond of the “President” tag. Now why is that, I wonder?

Anyway, I was on the phone with Mom when she asked, “Did Diana tell you that she’s Mayor?”

I was floored. “Huh?”

“She’s the Mayor.”

I turned to Daren. “Did Dana-mee say anything about being Mayor?”

“What?”

I turned back to the phone. “Nope, she didn’t tell –”

“WHAT?!”

Daren has never been elected Mayor, so she was surprised. I mean, REALLY surprised. Maybe even a little envious. At least that’s what I gathered from the volume and tenor of her expostulations.

Then I had a little talk with the new Mayor. According to her, she was nominated by one of the boys in her class last Tuesday, and her teacher concurred “‘cos I behave in school,” she said, “and I don’t want my name written on the board” — apparently the fate of rowdy classmates, and something to be avoided at all costs.

“OK,” I said, “but why didn’t you tell me?”

And she replied, “I was embarrassed!”

Oh. “So what do you do as Mayor?”

“I write the names of bad kids on the board.”

At which Daren hollered, “Is she sure she isn’t just assigned to do the writing?”

(The funny thing is, Diana’s annoyed when her classmates greet her with “Good morning, Mayor” and “Goodbye, Mayor.” Thinks they’re making fun of her, or something.)
